NOT EVERY STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY IS ALIVE
The Ghosts That Never Graduated**
I don’t know if people will believe me, but every time I walk through the corridors of our university late at night, I can feel that I am not alone. The lights flicker, the air turns cold, and sometimes I hear footsteps behind me — slow, heavy, and echoing — yet when I turn around, there’s no one there.
When I first came to this university, I heard stories from seniors about the “students who never left.” Everyone said it jokingly, but now I know it wasn’t a joke. There’s one classroom in the old Humanities building that no one uses anymore. They say a student hanged herself there after failing her final exam.
The school repainted the walls and locked the door, but sometimes, if you pass by at midnight, you can still hear the sound of a chair scraping against the floor and someone quietly sobbing.
During exam season, it’s even worse. People claim to see faces in the library mirrors, reflections that don’t match their movements. One night, my friend Nomsa swore she saw a girl sitting opposite her in the study area — pale, expressionless, wearing the old university uniform from the 1980s. When Nomsa looked away for a second and back again, the girl was gone, but the chair was still rocking slightly.
The security guards know about it too. One of them once told me he refuses to patrol the science block alone because he often hears a piano playing from the music department long after everyone’s left. The strange thing? The piano has been locked in storage for years.
Sometimes I wonder if these ghosts are trapped because of pain, failure, or unfinished dreams. Maybe they just never got the chance to leave, to move on, to graduate like the rest of us.
So whenever you feel a sudden chill during group study or see a shadow move across an empty hallway — don’t panic. Just whisper softly, *“You’ve done enough. You can rest now.”*
Because not every student at university is alive. Some are just... still learning how to leave.
