SHOCKING VIDEO OF BULLYING AT MILNERTON HIGH

Milnerton High Bullying Video Sparks Outrage and Police Investigation**

A disturbing video showing a Milnerton High School learner being violently assaulted by fellow pupils has caused national outrage after circulating widely on social media this week.

The footage, believed to have been recorded on **16 October**, shows a 16-year-old Grade 10 boy being beaten with belts and sticks inside what appears to be a school locker room. Several learners are seen standing by and laughing while the victim pleads for the attack to stop.

### School and Education Department Respond

The **Western Cape Education Department (WCED)** confirmed that it became aware of the video on **17 October** and has since launched an internal investigation.

WCED spokesperson **Bronagh Hammond** described the incident as “deeply concerning” and urged the public not to share the video, as it involves minors. “We are working closely with the school and the South African Police Service to ensure that disciplinary and legal processes are followed,” she said.

According to the school’s Code of Conduct, bullying and assault are serious offences that can lead to suspension, expulsion, or police action. The learners involved have reportedly been identified, and disciplinary hearings are expected to follow.

### Police Investigation Underway

**Milnerton SAPS** confirmed that a case of **assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH)** has been opened. Police spokesperson **Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi** said that statements have been taken from the victim and witnesses, and investigations are ongoing.

No arrests have been made so far, but police said further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation and whether criminal charges can be pursued.

### Family Seeks Justice

The victim’s mother told reporters that her son had previously reported bullying and harassment at school, but claims that “nothing was done.” She described her son as traumatised and afraid to return to school.

“This wasn’t a prank or an initiation. My child was beaten for fun while others watched. I want justice for him,” she said.

### Public Reaction

The video has sparked widespread condemnation online, with parents, civic groups, and politicians calling for accountability.

The **Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Basic Education** issued a statement condemning the assault, calling it “an unacceptable act of violence that cannot be tolerated in any learning environment.”

Education activists have also questioned the culture of “initiation rituals” at some schools, where younger learners are allegedly bullied under the guise of tradition or team bonding — particularly within sports teams.

### Calls for Action

Anti-bullying organisations have urged schools to strengthen monitoring systems, provide counselling to victims, and implement zero-tolerance policies against violence.

“Schools must be safe spaces,” said a representative from the **South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG)**. “No learner should ever fear humiliation or physical harm from peers.”

### Moving Forward

The WCED said it would continue to provide psychosocial support to affected learners and will take “firm and appropriate action” once the investigation concludes.

The public has been reminded not to circulate the video further, as doing so violates the privacy and dignity of the minors involved.
