Another Fatal Scholar Transport Accident: One Dead, 109 Learners Injured on R510
One person has died and 109 school learners were injured following a serious road accident on the R510 between Thabazimbi and Northam in Limpopo on Thursday morning.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the crash occurred at approximately 06:10 near Amanda Mine and involved a Toyota Hilux LDV and a Volkswagen bus transporting school learners.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Toyota Hilux was overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with the oncoming scholar transport bus. The driver of the Hilux, a 58-year-old man, sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident. A total of 109 learners sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. 103 learners were transported to Thabazimbi Provincial Hospital, while six others were taken to Anderbilt Mine Hospital** for further medical treatment.
The department has indicated that reckless driving is suspected to be the possible cause of the crash. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has extended its condolences to the family of the deceased driver and wished the injured learners a speedy recovery. Motorists have also been urged to exercise extreme caution and obey traffic laws, especially when transporting or sharing the road with vulnerable road users such as school children.
